The deadline for a ransom demand related to the Manage My Health data breach has passed, with hackers threatening to leak over 400,000 files if their demand is not met. The ransom of $60,000 was set to expire at 5:37 AM New Zealand time, following a warning issued on Telegram.
Manage My Health, which serves the largest patient portal in the country, is currently dealing with a data breach affecting more than 120,000 users. The company has stated that any ransom negotiations would be handled by law enforcement and has refrained from commenting further while the investigation continues.
Former intelligence officer criticism has emerged regarding the platform's communication during this crisis. Health Minister Simeon Brown has indicated dissatisfaction with the transparency of Manage My Health, emphasizing the need for improved communication with the public and affected users. He noted that the situation is "pretty unacceptable" and announced an urgent review into the breach.
