A former executive at L3Harris, Peter Williams, has been sentenced to 87 months in prison for his involvement in the theft and sale of hacking and surveillance tools to a Russian company. Williams, who is 39 years old and an Australian citizen, pleaded guilty to leaking sensitive trade secrets, receiving approximately $1.3 million in cryptocurrency between 2022 and 2025.
Prosecutors described Williams as having "betrayed" the United States, utilizing his position as general manager of Trenchant, a division focused on developing tools for U.S. intelligence. He allegedly exploited his complete access to secure company networks to transfer hacking tools to a portable hard drive and his computer.
The tools sold to Operation Zero, identified by the U.S. government as a major exploit broker, could potentially compromise millions of devices globally. Williams communicated with Operation Zero using a pseudonym, leaving questions about whether they were aware of his true identity.
