The gradual shift from usernames and passwords to passkeys is gaining traction in the tech industry, offering heightened security as these credentials do not store personal data. Reddit CEO Steve Huffman highlighted that the implementation of Face ID and Touch ID not only enhances security but also verifies human presence, which is crucial for combating bot activity on the platform.
Huffman emphasized during an appearance on the TBPN podcast that passkeys confirm a user’s identity by requiring a physical action, such as touching or looking at the device, without sharing any biometric information with websites. This method aligns with Reddit's commitment to user privacy, as the platform does not seek to know the identities of its users.
Co-founder Alexis Ohanian expressed confusion regarding the technology, suggesting on X that the concept of face scanning may not resonate with Reddit users. However, Huffman clarified that the biometric data remains secure and is never disclosed to the app or service, only validating that a human is present.
