Apple is enhancing iPhone security with a feature designed to automatically lock the device upon detecting that it has been snatched. This new capability aims to strengthen existing anti-theft measures, which include programs like Find My and Activation Lock. Currently, many of these systems can be compromised if a thief seizes an unlocked phone.
The forthcoming feature will utilize the iPhone’s accelerometer to recognize when it has been taken from a user’s hand. It will also assess the proximity to a paired Apple Watch to determine ownership. If the device is determined to have been taken in an unfamiliar location, it will lock automatically and limit access based on protocols similar to those used in Stolen Device Protection.
While specific launch dates remain undisclosed, indications from code reviewed by 9to5Mac suggest that Apple is actively developing this feature. Enhanced security measures are anticipated to be welcomed by users concerned about device theft.
