Approximately 22.65 million individuals will be informed by Aflac about a recent data breach that compromised their personal information. This incident involved the theft of sensitive data such as Social Security numbers, health information, and government-issued identification from the insurance giant.
The breach was acknowledged by Aflac in June, but details regarding the number of affected customers were not initially disclosed. Aflac's filings with both the Texas and Iowa attorney generals outlined that the stolen information also includes names, dates of birth, home addresses, and driver’s license numbers.
Federal law enforcement and cybersecurity experts have suggested that the attackers may belong to a cyber-criminal organization targeting the insurance sector. Aflac indicated that a group known as Scattered Spider is likely responsible, as they had been actively targeting insurance companies during the timeframe of the breach. Aflac serves approximately 50 million customers.
