More than 20,225 Instagram accounts have been compromised due to a vulnerability involving Meta's AI support chatbot, as confirmed by the company. A formal notice submitted to authorities in Maine outlined the incident, attributing the issue to a “bug” in the system.
Hackers exploited this flaw to gain unauthorized access to accounts, bypassing the standard two-factor authentication process. Users could simply request a password reset through the chatbot to take control of the accounts.
Meta's acknowledgment of the breach follows its internal investigation into the chatbot's security measures. The company is likely to enhance its protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
